Hello! My name is Lydia Schoessling, and I am pleased to join Womanhood Unfiltered’s team. I have always had an interest in writing; ever since I was able to write, I’ve done so. I have experience in numerous media, from creative to nonfiction writing, and I decided to dedicate my life to writing.
This newsroom will focus on a wide range of issues impacting marginalized communities. I aim to uplift voices, combat misconceptions, and help others become more educated about what is going on around them.
I received an Associate’s Degree in Journalism from Wilbur Wright Community College in Chicago. During my time there, I was the Head Editor for their literary arts magazine, The Wright Side, and the following year was promoted to Editor-in-Chief. I also freelanced articles for The Wright Times, the student newspaper, and discovered that Illinois was among the many states with rising anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. This is an issue I followed into my next school, and continue to monitor.
I am currently finishing my Bachelor’s degree in Multimedia Journalism at Elmhurst University, and I have been a part of their student newspaper, The Leader, as both a reporter and copy editor.
I have covered a wide range of issues: protests, legislation, art events, student affairs, and more. I have spoken with politicians, psychologists, organizations, activist groups — all types of people and perspectives.
I have relocated to the Baltimore area to be closer to D.C, as I have a goal to eventually get into political journalism. I am very passionate about human rights, and I believe now more than ever that integral journalism is needed.
I look forward to sharing people’s stories and delivering unbiased news with you all. I will leave you with a quote from my favorite author, Bell Hooks: “The heart of justice is truth telling, seeing ourselves and the world the way it is rather than the way we want to be.”
