People with periods have used a variety of products throughout the ages. Today, there are many options — pads, tampons, menstrual cups, period underwear and more — all designed to help during that time of the month.
Many use a combination of products to help people through their period. According to a survey run by Lydia’s Newsroom, 56% of respondents used tampons, 33% used pads, and 11% used period cups. One respondent noted that they utilize pads as well as period underwear.
Another survey run by Womanhood Unfiltered, where respondents could select multiple products, found that 42% used tampons, 25% used period panties, 17% used pads, and 17% used cups.
Choosing the right product is personal, but everyone can agree that safety is a priority, not a preference.
Made Safe, a non-profit organization, released a report titled “Product Profile: Period Products” that outlines what to look for when shopping. Key toxins to avoid include dioxins and furans, heavy metals, high-risk pesticides in cotton-based products, superabsorbent polymers and plastic or synthetic materials.
In all products, avoid fragrance, which can cause irritation. For tampons, pads and liners, look for 100% organic cotton or hemp that is unbleached or bleached without chlorine. If possible, choose plastic-free packaging, as many wrappers and applicators are not biodegradable. For menstrual cups, look for undyed, 100% medical-grade silicone.
When shopping for reusable pads and liners, choose organic cotton without plastics, plasticizers, nanomaterials or polyfluoroalkyl substances. Period panties should primarily use cotton, and brands should disclose all materials used. Avoid anything labeled “antimicrobial” or “antibacterial,” which can indicate the use of nanomaterials or other chemical treatments such as silver nanoparticles.
No matter what you use, it’s crucial to protect yourself from materials that can harm your body. Staying informed and reading ingredient labels carefully can help you avoid potential health or comfort issues.

This was so good ! Thank you so much for sharing Lydia!
